Crates, Weights & Rates

It is important that you purchase the correct size container for your dog. Airlines use the following specifications from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA) to ensure that animals have sufficient space to lie in a natural position and to manoeuvre comfortably while in transit.

Volumetric weight vs actual weight

Take note that airlines make use of volumetric weight and not mass (actual kilograms) to calculate the travel costs. You can calculate the volumetric weight of your dog’s crate using the following formula:

Length x width x height of crate in cm / 6 000 (formula to calculate volumetric weight)

For example: You are flying a Dalmatian in a Sky #400 kennel. The dog weighs 35 kg.

Dimensions of kennel: 91 cm x 61 cm x 66 cm / 6 000

= 366 366 / 6 000

= 61.06 kg

The cost of the flight will be determined by the volumetric weight of 61 kg and not the dog’s weight of 35 kg. To show the difference in cost applicable to volumetric weight as opposed to actual weight, we’ve taken the example above one step further.

Table 1.2 shows the difference in cost as determined by volumetric weight as opposed to the dog’s actual weight:

R1360,00

R1 571,97

As you will note from the example above, there is a vast difference between the costs determined by volumetric weight compared to actual weight. For this reason it’s advisable to calculate your costs based on volumetric weight in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Dogs travelling with their owners

Since 4 May 2015, pet owners can no longer transport their pets as excess baggage when they travel with British Airways or Kulula. Dogs now need to be booked in at the BidAir PetLounge prior to boarding the plane. In an effort to accommodate pet owners who travel to shows all over South Africa, BidAir approved a flat rate based on volumetric weight.

Table 1.3 displays the flat rate when you fly with your dog:
