Guidelines for the registration of litters resulting from Artificial Insemination

Schedule 2 Reg. 4.5 In the case of a dog bred by means of artificial insemination properly authenticated documentary evidence of ownership of the donor semen, collection of the donor semen and insemination of the donor semen is required. In the case of dual sire matings, the entire litter will be required to be DNA parentage verified against both sires used.

Schedule 2 Reg.4.4 – In the case of those breeds listed in Appendix “C” to this Schedule the Sire and Dam shall comply with the specific requirements detailed for the registration of litters.

IMPORTATION OF FROZEN SEMEN

Prior to importing any frozen semen, it is strongly recommended that members consult with a veterinary fertility service and consult with the State Veterinary Services to establish health test requirements in order to attain the required Veterinary Import Permit.

Kennel Union requirements to be met for registration purposes: -

SEMEN COLLECTION & STORAGE CERTIFICATE

1. The Collection Certificate must be on an official letterhead and include the contact details of the Veterinary Institution/Service where semen collection took place.

2. Donor Dog details- Breed/Full registered name/Overseas Kennel Club Registration Number/Microchip number/Colour/Date of Birth.

3. Details of the Owner(s) of the donor dog at time of semen collection -Title/Initials/Surname/ Address/Email/ Telephone No

4. Details of the Semen Collection: Date(s) of collection/Number of straws collected/ID Label markings of the straws/form of storage (pellets, ampules, vials, straws).

5. Signed Declaration from Veterinarian, confirming that the donor dog was positively identified via microchip and that semen was collected and stored.

(Electronic/ Digital signatures are accepted)

6. Signature of the donor dog’s owner(s) as witness and granting of approval of collection and storage of the semen. Signature of all owners of the donor dog is required.

CONFIRMATION OF OWNERSHIP OF DONOR SEMEN

1. Written approval bearing a signature and contact details of the owner of the overseas donor dog confirming that the semen was purchased for the purpose of artificial insemination by the applicant. (Title, Initials, Surname and South African address of the applicant is required)

2. The name of the owner(s) of the sire must coincide with the name of the owner(s) recorded on the Certified Pedigree/ Certificate of Registration issued by a recognised Kennel Club.

3. The number of straws sold, date of sale, transfer of ownership and ID Label markings of the straws must be declared and linked to the Semen Collection Certificate (Certificate reference number or date).

5. Alternately, the owner of the overseas donor dog may sign the official Kennel Union Application Form for the registration of a complete litter. The name of the owner(s) of the sire must coincide with the name of the owner(s) recorded on the Certified Pedigree/ Certificate of Registration issued by the overseas Kennel Club

CERTIFIED PEDIGREE OF DONOR DOG

1. Copy of Certificate of Registration/Certified Pedigree of donor dog providing 3 generations of ancestry issued by a foreign Kennel Club in reciprocity with or recognised by the Kennel Union of Southern Africa. Legible copy of complete Certified Pedigree is required (original Certified Pedigree is not required)

2. The donor dog must be microchipped, and the microchip number must appear on the Certified Pedigree/Certificate of Registration

3. If the name of the owner of the donor dog does not appear on the Certificate of Registration/Certified Pedigree a separate Certificate of Ownership issued by the overseas Kennel Club will be required.

4. When the owner of the foreign registered sire declared on the Certified Pedigree differs from the owner of the donor semen declared on the semen Collection Certificate, written confirmation will be required to be attained from the registered owner of the donor dog, to confirm that the donor semen is the rightful property of the person named on the semen Collection Certificate. CERTIFICATE OF INSEMINATION

1. Certificate of Insemination must be on an official Letterhead bearing the contact details of the Veterinary Institution/Service where the insemination procedure took place

2. Details of the Bitch inseminated including the Breed/Full Registered Name/KUSA Registration no./Microchip no./Colour /Date of Birth and full name of the owner(s) of the Bitch (Title/Initials/Surname)

3. Signature of the Owner(s) of the Bitch as witness and granting approval for the insemination. The signature of all owners of the dam is required.

4. Details of the Donor Dog including the Breed/ Full registered Name/ Overseas Kennel Club Registration Number/ Microchip no. / DNA profile no(optional) /Colour/ Date of Birth/Date semen was collected.

5. Signed Declaration from the Veterinarian, confirming that the Bitch was positively identified via microchip, the number of straws inseminated, confirming the identification details of the donor semen straw labels and storage facility, date(s) insemination was performed and method of insemination used. (Digital/electronic signatures are accepted)

APPLICATION FOR REGISTRATION OF A COMPLETE LITTER

1. Application Form to be completed and signed by all owners of the dam and sire. {Click here to download Application Form}

2. Indicate on the application form, mating was by Artificial Insemination

3 Signature for the witness of the mating is not mandatory. (The Certificate of insemination will bear the required signatures)

4. Owner(s) of the dam must be current members of KUSA and their Kennel Name must be registered and current.

5. The dam must be registered with KUSA and must be microchipped.

6. Owner of the Sire. The signature of the overseas owner of the donor dog is not required if acceptable documentation is submitted confirming that the

donor semen was purchased and is owned by the applicant(s) residing in RSA. (Confirmation of Ownership of Donor Semen)

7. In the case where the donor semen has not been sold and remains the property of the overseas owner of the donor dog, the overseas owner will be required to sign the application form as the owner of the sire.

8. All puppies in the litter must be microchipped

BREED SPECIFIC REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS (Refer to Schedule 2 Appendix C & E)

Setter (Irish) – donor sire must be CLEAR or INHERITED CLEAR for CLAD/PRA rcd 1/LOPRA rcd 4

Setter (Red & White) - donor sire must be CLEAR or INHERITED CLEAR for CLAD/ Vwd

Setter (Gordon) - donor sire must be CLEAR or INHERITED CLEAR for LOPRA rcd 4

Retriever (Labrador) -for semen collected after 1 October 2021, the donor dog must have a clear test result for the dilute colour gene from a recognised

genetic laboratory or proven to be hereditary clear of carrying the Dilute gene (Dd) or of being affected by the Dilute gene (dd)

Rottweilers – Refer to Schedule 2 Appendix C & E

- The donor sire must be microchipped

-The donor sire must be screened for HD & ED. HD & ED screening done under the age of 12 months, will not be accepted.

- Only FCI / ADRK HD grading’s will be accepted from FCI recognised Institutions & Veterinary Universities as per Schedule 2 Appendix E Regulation 9.2.4

-The donor sire must be over the age of 18 months at the time of collection of semen

- The donor sire’s HD grade must be C2:C2 or better (refer to Schedule 2 App C for acceptable dam to sire HD combinations)

German Shepherd Dogs – Refer to Schedule 2 Appendix C

- The donor sire must be microchipped

- The donor sire must be over the age of 18 months at the time of collection of semen

- The donor sire must be screened for HD & ED after having reached the age of 12 months.

- The donor sire’s HD grade must be C2:C2 or better (refer to Schedule 2 App C for acceptable dam to sire HD combinations)

- The donor sire’s ED grade must be ED2:2 or better

- For donor sire’s born after 01.01.2020, the donor sire must have a Breed Grading of Good(G) or better.

- The donor sire must be DNA profiled (not mandatory in the case of imported frozen semen)

Alaskan Malamute Refer to Schedule 2 Appendix C

- The donor sire must be microchipped

-The donor sire must be screened for HD after having reached the age of 12 months

-The donor sire’s HD grade must be C2:C2 or better (refer to Schedule 2 App C for acceptable dam to sire HD combinations)

Dobermann Refer to Schedule 2 Appendix C

- The donor sire must be microchipped

-The donor sire must have been screened for HD after having reached the age of 12 months

-The donor sire’s HD grade must be B2:B2 or better (refer to Schedule 2 App C for acceptable dam to sire HD combinations)

Giant Schnauzers Refer to Schedule 2 Appendix C

- The donor sire must be microchipped

- The donor sire must have been screened for HD after having reached the age of 12 months

-The donor sire’s HD grade must be C2:C2 or better (refer to Schedule 2 App C for acceptable dam to sire HD combinations)

Rhodesian Ridgebacks Refer to Schedule 2 Appendix C

- The donor sire must be microchipped

-The donor sire must have been screened for HD after having reached the age of 12 months

-The donor sire’s HD grade must be B1:B1 or better (refer to Schedule 2 App C for acceptable dam to sire HD combinations)

Weimaraner Refer to Schedule 2 Appendix C

- The donor sire must be microchipped

- The donor sire must have been screened for HD after having reached the age of 12 months

-The donor sire’s HD grade must be C2:C2 or better (refer to Schedule 2 App C for acceptable dam to sire HD combinations)

Biewer Terrier Refer to Schedule 2 Appendix C

- The donor sire must be microchipped

-The donor sire must have been DNA profiled & DNA parentage verified by Onderstepoort Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (OPVGL)

- If imported semen is used DNA parentage verification of the donor sire is not mandatory.

South African Mastiff- Refer to Schedule 2 Appendix C

- The donor sire must be microchipped

-The donor sire must have been screened for HD

-The donor sire must be over the age of 16 months at the time of collection of the semen

-The donor sire must be DNA profiled

-The donor sire must have a Breed Grading of Good(G) or better.
